An invitation for anyone who has a heart for prayer

The act of prayer is sacred and open to everyone, whether you sign up to participate in Second-Ponce at Prayer or not. By entering into this specific ministry, you are committing to one year of regular prayer -- at least weekly -- lifting the concerns, celebrations and ministries of Second-Ponce de Leon to our Heavenly Father. We invite you to walk this path of prayer with us.

What is Second-Ponce at Prayer?

Prayer is a vital spiritual activity. It involves intimate communication with our Lord and Savior, and it is something that we do collectively and individually all the time at Second-Ponce de Leon. Second-Ponce at Prayer is the name we've given to a new ministry opportunity in which anyone who has a heart for prayer and for the prayer needs of our church family can participate. It involves committing to one year of praying regularly for the concerns of our church and the requests that are given to us. What makes this an exciting opportunity is the introduction of our Second-Ponce de Leon Web site (www.spdl.org) as a way to share these prayer requests with you on a daily basis.

What do participants in this ministry do?

Once you have signed up to participate, you will be provided with an introductory letter that will share the login ID and password to the Second-Ponce at Prayer Web page. By password-protecting this page, we are upholding the confidentiality of the information shared on this Web page, and ask that you do the same. The Web page will be updated daily with the same type of information that is now shared on our prayer sheets at Wednesday night Fellowship Suppers, including:

  • birth announcements;
  • sympathy and death notices;
  • hospitalizations;
  • celebrations, concerns and other prayer requests.

We will give participants a set of prayer cards to mail out to those for whom they have prayed.

The Web page will also include a prayer resources section written by Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care Dr. Charles Qualls, in which he will explore many different aspects of prayer. He will include information for enhancing your prayer life and links to other helpful devotional and spiritual resources.

Can I participate without a computer or Internet access?

Yes. Each week, the information that has been posted on the Web site will be compiled and mailed to those participants who have no Internet access. So even though you will not have daily updates, the information will still be shared with you on a regular basis.

Do I have to sign up to participate in Second-Ponce at Prayer in order to know about our church family prayer requests?

Not necessarily. General information will still be shared on Wednesday nights, and to a lesser extent in the "Among Our Members" section of the Church News. Second-Ponce at Prayer is intended for those who consider -- or would like to develop -- prayer as a central part of their spiritual practice.

What quiet place can I find at Second-Ponce in which to pray?

While our Prayer Cottage had served us well since the early 1990s, increasingly, many members felt that time or geography prevented them from coming to the cottage. Additionally, there were safety concerns about early morning or late night sessions for those coming alone.

During the Chapel Building Renovation, the south corner of the Sanctuary Narthex (lobby) will serve as our prayer corner. You will be encouraged to come and pray here occasionally as part of Second-Ponce at Prayer. Once building work is completed, the existing Prayer Room near the Swilley Chapel will be available during office hours and on Sundays. The Prayer Room will be a sacred place of prayer for our members.
