God Does Not Take the Summer Off

By David and Renee Grubbs

Around our house, we always look forward summer. It is a chance to spend more relaxed time with family, when school and work commitments slow down and the days are longer and warmer beckoning us to get outside! Summer camps and Camp Nana/Papa/Gigi take the place of heavily scheduled weeks during the school year. Our kids miss out on many local activities when summer rolls around especially as they get older. However, they have had the chance to grow up with grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family each summer in north Georgia, Nashville, Tennessee and Murphy, North Carolina. Spending time at the lake, hanging out on the screened-in porch, big meals & visits with family is something they will never forget.

You may be like us and do not realize how common it is for churches to see what’s been thoughtfully coined “the summer giving slump,” where giving declines between May and August. Many churches see a twenty percent or more hit in giving during these months due to members being on vacation, going to BBQ’s, traveling with family, etc. Sound familiar?
While we may not always participate in the summer activities as often as we would like, we know just how busy the church continues to be while we are away. Vacation Bible School, Passport Camp, summer mission trips, the Peachtree Road Race and many more wonderful activities planned by our willing staff and volunteers keep our vibrant outreach alive and well.

This year, Second Ponce has put together an effort to remind us of the priorities we value as a church. Second-Ponce’s work never takes a summer off. The Giving Staycation initiated by the church from May to July this year is a great reminder to keep up with our commitments whether we are traveling for the summer or just unable to make it to church every Sunday. Our church has been a big part of our lives since joining almost 20 years ago. We feel very fortunate to have to happy, healthy kids who have grown up here. We have enjoyed supper clubs, VBS, Sunday school, Braves games, church building trips, multiple church committees, morning visits to swim laps in the Family Life Center pool and the most of all the fellowship of our church family. The church has been faithful to us.

While we may be not always be present, our gifts to the church should be consistent. Second-Ponce has initiated online giving which makes it so simple for us to make sure we give back whether we are spending time with family out-of-state or here with our church family! This is where a calendar reminder comes in very handy!

Corinthians 9:7 says, So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

Be a cheerful giver. Be a consistent giver. God does not take the summer off nor should we.
