A Brief History

The history of Second-Ponce and a few of the ministry milestones along the way.

Built on Relationships

Modern-day Second-Ponce was formed when three Buckhead churches merged. The first, Second Baptist Church, was founded in 1854. During the Civil War, it was spared from being burned due to the efforts of Father Thomas O’Reilly, who was the Catholic priest at the nearby Immaculate Conception Church. In 1929, the second and third founding churches, Ponce de Leon Avenue Baptist and Buckhead Baptist, merged and moved to the corner of Peachtree Road and East Wesley Road where SPdL sits today. Three years later, on November 18, 1932, on the merger of Second Baptist Church and Ponce de Leon Baptist Church birthed Second-Ponce.

In 2004, author, historian and Professor of Religion Dr. C. Douglas Weaver, wrote Second to None: A History of Second--Ponce De Leon Baptist Church, 1854-2004.
