Position Description

Overview

The Senior Pastor is the spiritual and administrative leader of the church. He or She is responsible for proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ; teaching Biblical truths through challenging sermons; engaging in pastoral care ministries both within the church and the community; facilitating outreach efforts to new congregants; and for leading collaborative opportunities to grow the church through finances and attendance.

  • Staff Teams: Ministerial Staff

  • Congregational Teams: Executive Committee and Leadership Council, Ex-officio member of committees

Essential Job Functions

    • Inspire spiritual growth of the congregation through Biblically based sermons, dynamic, Spirit-led worship services and observance of ordinances and Bible teaching. Responsible for pulpit supply when away.

    • Provide vision, leadership, planning and evaluation for the coordinated work of the church.

    • Lead the church in effective programs of Bible study, discipleship, evangelism, outreach, new member assimilation, leadership development and community ministries.

    • Encourage and model congregational support of local, state, national and international missions through the giving of time, talent, finances and resources.

    • Provide pastoral care through prayer, visitation, funerals, weddings, baby dedications and spiritual counseling.

    • Conduct wedding ceremonies, funeral services and other life rites of passage events as needed with the prerogative of delegating to other staff members when appropriate.

    • Challenge the church to faithful stewardship and ensure the proper use of offerings and income.

    • Represent Second-Ponce through community involvement.

    • Cooperate with other ministry partners in matters of mutual interest and concern.

    • Prepare an annual strategic plan in collaboration with the Leadership Council that includes goals with measurable outcomes as appropriate.

    • Promote harmony within the staff and members of the congregation. 

    • Cooperate with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship global office and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Georgia, unless the church directs otherwise.

    • Lead and oversee the ministerial staff, coordinate and motivate committees and councils, inspire Deacons and volunteers to serve.

    • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to church bylaws and personnel policies and procedures.

    • Serve ex-officio on all standing boards, committees and councils with the prerogative of delegating to other ministerial staff.

    • Perform other duties that the Personnel Committee and Senior Pastor may agree upon.

    • Recommends, in consultation with the Personnel Committee, additional staff positions and salary adjustments as deemed necessary to accomplish the church mission.

    • Managing Purpose & Vision: Understands the culture and values of this church; articulates and supports its mission and direction; communicates a compelling and inspired sense of how individuals contribute to the church’s purpose and vision.

    • Conflict Management: Steps up to conflicts, seeing them as opportunities; addresses conflicts by focusing on the issues at hand to develop effective solutions when disputes or disagreements occur; helps others resolve conflicts by providing impartial mediation when needed.

    • Communication: Writes and speaks effectively; demonstrates openness and honesty; listens well during meetings and feedback sessions; explains reasoning behind own opinions; asks others for their opinions; engages stakeholders at the appropriate level of decision making; uses consideration and tact when offering opinions; embraces digital technology.

    • Executive Leadership: Has the willingness and ability to focus on the larger view of the church rather than one’s own area of functional or operational responsibility; can think, reflect, conceptualize and converse on issues of strategic significance to the church's future.

    • Biblical Scholarship: Keeps studying and learning to gain deeper understanding of Scripture; delves into Biblical interpretation, life application and holistic implementation.
