Youth at Second-Ponce

The Youth Ministry at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church is made up of students from all over Atlanta, who come together from different schools, different parts of town, and different areas of interest to form a unique community where all are welcome and accepted.

Mission Statement:
The Youth Ministry of Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church is a community committed to walk the road of life together and help shape one another into loving and graceful disciples of Jesus. Through worship, service, and formation we seek to provide a place of belonging where students are empowered and enabled to take ownership of their place in God’s work in the world.

Core Attributes:
We believe the interconnectedness of the following core attributes to be the building blocks of a strong holistic youth ministry:
• Authentic
• Formative
• Mission-Focused
• Relational
• Safe
• Sustainable

A 5:1 Ministry
This is one of the most important (new) pieces of our ministry. We want to create in our ministry a 5:1 adult-to-youth ratio — five adults caring for each youth. We don’t mean five Sunday school teachers, or chaperones for every youth. We’re talking about five adults who are recruited to invest in our students in little, medium, and big ways. This model comes from the research of the Fuller Youth Institute and their incredible book, Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids. Find out how to get involved!

What We Do

  • Sundays @ 9:45am – Youth Gathering & Bible Study
As the centerpiece of our ministry, each Sunday morning begins with breakfast and large group gathering time, and centers around worship and age group specific Bible Study. All are welcome, and we strongly encourage our students to arrive on time to make the most of our time together.
  • Sundays @ 11:00am – Worship
Following Bible Study our students join the rest of the church for a meaningful hour of intergenerational worship in the Sanctuary
  • Wednesdays @ 6:00pm – Project 4:12
Following the apostle Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 4:12, “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for believers, in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity,” the youth ministry at Second-Ponce aims to provide opportunities for our youth to explore how faith and life intersect, and to take what we learn in Sunday Bible Study and apply it to life. After enjoying dinner together as a church the youth head downstairs to the Youth Area to begin their week-night gathering focused on faith formation through group discussion and topical studies. (The 1st Wednesday of each month is Game Night)
  • Retreats, Camps, and Special Events:
Sunday Fun-day: About once a month on Sunday afternoons our group gathers for a fun activity in or around Atlanta.
  • Fall Retreat (November 9-11, 2018)
Each year, we take a weekend retreat with youth in order to draw us closer to the heart of God and to one another as a community. Through fellowship, games, discussion, campfires, and worship, youth are able to connect with God and with the youth group in powerful ways, and explore each year’s ministry theme.
  • Youth Lock-In
Once a year we hold a Lock-In, an all-night party for the SPdL Youth and their friends. Lock-Ins are usually scheduled the evening of the last day of APS school before Christmas break.
  • Winter Retreat
Every year we either head north for a Ski Trip, or head south for something a little different. We go to places like North Carolina and even Disney World!
  • Spring Mission Weekend
In the Spring of each year we spend one weekend engaged in local and regional missions through either CBF Georgia’s March Mission Madness state-wide youth retreat or our local Disciple Now weekend retreat, taking place in church members’ homes.
  • Passport Youth Camp
Every summer, Second-Ponce takes the youth group to attend Passport Youth Camp. Passport Youth Camp’s mission is to “empower students to encounter Christ, embrace community, and extend grace to the world.” Passport always proves to be one of the best weeks of youth ministry that we have all year long. Youth have the opportunity to connect with God, bond with the youth group, meet youth from around the country, and have a lot of fun! Find out more information about Passport through their website: www.passportcamps.org.
