April-June is a busy time at Second-Ponce, and we know it’s a hectic season for our church family. So, we’re using this blog to share some spring and summer events to place on your calendar. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it’s a good start!

Worship & Discipleship

Palm Sunday | April 2
Coffee & Fellowship: 9:15 a.m. | Sunday School & Small Groups: 9:45 a.m. | Worship: 11 a.m.

Worship with us! In our Sanctuary worship service, we’ll share meaningful prayer, music and Scripture and hear "Who Is This?” from Senior Pastor Dr. Dock Hollingsworth. Watch online on our Facebook page or on Livestream.

Maundy Thursday Supper & Worship | April 6
Supper: 5 p.m. | Worship: 6 p.m.

Join us Thursday, April 6 as we honor Maundy Thursday and the Last Supper. After sharing a meal together, special guests Rev. Dr. David G. Garber, Jr. and Dr. Michelle Brooks Garber will lead us through a meaningful worship experience. The Garbers come to us from the McAfee School of Theology where David is the Associate Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew and Director of Distance Learning and Michelle serves as Director of Academic Success and Assessment. RSVP is required for supper. On the menu: Fried chicken, potato salad, vegetable, salad & dessert. Sign up by Noon, Monday, April 3, at www.spdl.org/rsvp.

NOTE: This event will be in lieu of our regular Wednesday night activities.

Annual Community Good Friday Service | April 7
Noon | Peachtree Road United Methodist Church

All are welcome and encouraged to attend this annual Buckhead Good Friday service. Special music begins at 11:45 a.m. followed by worship and a homily from Rev. David F. Richards, III of New Hope A.M.E. Church. Parking is available on the PRUMC campus, and the service will be streamed live at prumc.org/worship. Participating congregations: Peachtree Road UMC, Second-Ponce, Church at Wieuca, Peachtree Church and Cathedral of Christ the King.

Coffee & Fellowship: 9:15 a.m. | Sunday School & Small Groups: 9:45 a.m. | Worship: 11 a.m. | Lemonade on the Lawn: Noon

Sunday, April 9, Celebrate our Risen Savior at Second-Ponce! We'll begin with Sunday School and small groups at 9:45 a.m. followed by worship at 11 in the Sanctuary. Bring your best blooms as we'll flower the cross* prior to the service. At Noon, we'll fellowship together during Lemonade on the Lawn where you'll have the opportunity to take pictures with the flowered cross. Invite your friends, family and neighbors to experience this joyful Sunday together!

April Suppers & SPdLU | Wednesdays, April 12, 19 & 26
Fellowship Supper: 5 p.m./ $8/adult; $5/child | SPdLU: 6 p.m. | Fellowship Hall & Zoom

You don’t want to miss Fellowship Supper and SPdLU Wednesdays, April 12, 19 & 26! After enjoying a delicious meal, we’ll enjoy a time of adult discipleship (SPdLU) led by some great performers and speakers!

  • April 12: Voices of Love, an all-female, acapella, singing group who has performed at the bedside of Atlanta's dying for 12 years. Each VOL performance is focused on the dying person with harmonies and repetition conducive to rest and comfort. Our own Jeanne Williams is a member of Voices of Love and she, along with the rest of the group, will share about this ministry. Read the AJC article about Voices of Love here.

  • April 19 & 26: Spiritual Disciplines with Dan Hayes | Growing in Christ is a process that involves Christ’s Holy Spirit, us as individuals, and the larger Body of Christ, the Church. In this new Wednesday night series, SPdL member Dan Hayes will lead us through “Inward, Outward and Corporate Disciplines” which will help propel us individually and as a church toward more effectively fulfilling our purpose and mission.

Special Guest Preacher: Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III | Sunday, April 23

Second-Ponce is excited to welcome renowned preacher, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III to our pulpit Sunday, April 23! As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was recently recognized as one of the “12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World” by Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. Make plans to us for worship on this special Sunday to hear powerful preaching and inspiring music!

Church in Conference | Sunday, April 23
Noon | Lunch: $8/person | Fellowship Hall & Zoom

Join us for the second Church in Conference of 2023! A spring salad lunch will be available for $8/person. On the menu: Choice of chipotle chicken salad, caesar chicken salad or a vegetarian salad along with dessert and a drink. If you're planning to attend online, we invite you to bring your lunch, too! All attendees should sign up here and be sure to indicate if you'd like to reserve a meal.

Community & Missions

Community Egg Hunt | Saturday, April 1
11 a.m.–1 p.m. | Second-Ponce Campus | Free and Open to the Public 

Hop on down to Second-Ponce for our annual Community Egg Hunt! We're packing this event with lots of food, games, balloon twisting, prize raffles, face painting and crafts. Children will hunt eggs in waves by age group, and there will be a designated "nut-free zone." This event is free and open to the public, so spread the word!

Young Adult March Madness Watch Party | Sunday, April 1
5:30 p.m. | Whitney Anderson's House

Come eat, watch basketball, hang out and see who wins the bracket pool! Bring a side dish or dessert to share. Let Allie know if you’re coming.

Canned Fruit Drive for Toco Hills Community Alliance | Sunday, April 2-30
During the month of April, we're collecting canned fruits for the Toco Hills Community Alliance. Beginning Sunday, April 2, collection bins will be in the Welcome Center. Toco Hills Community Alliance (THCA) is a group of faith communities and other partners working together to assist families and individuals in Northeast Atlanta with: 

  • Emergency food assistance and clothing

  • Programs and services that result in greater economic stability and independence

  • Community connections for organizations and individuals to serve their neighbors

Spring Swing | Tuesday, April 4
9 a.m.-1 p.m. | Free Event | Free Pickleball lessons every half hour beginning at 9:30 a.m

Please come join us as we Swing into Spring! Silver Sneakers and Anthem Healthcare have partnered to host this event at the CWC and there will be representatives on-hand from each organization to answer any questions you may have about either program. Attendance prizes will be given away, including two new VULCAN Paddles. Please note this is NOT a sales event.   

April WMU Lunch & Fellowship | Tuesday, April 4

Everyone is invited to join the WMU for their April lunch and fellowship! After a delicious meal, we'll welcome Head of School Rosemary Aybar from Collective Learning Academy. CLA "educates and empowers students with disabilities so they can live, learn and lead." Second-Ponce is honored to have the Collective Learning Academy operating from our church campus. So, join us for lunch and come meet our neighbors!

Young Adult April Dinners

Young adults, join us at one, some or all of our monthly dinners! We'll decompress from the day and just have a good time together. The cost is your own meal. Stay tuned for specific locations, and RSVP by letting Allie know you're coming.

Respite Care Atlanta Volunteer Sessions | Mondays
10:30 a.m. | RCA Area of SPdL

Respite Care Atlanta needs volunteers for a few hours a week to greet, serve lunch, lead exercise or music and walk alongside members who have cognitive impairment. If you’re interested, please attend one of the RCA volunteer information sessions below. Sign up ASAP!

Prime Timers' Lunch & Gibbs Gardens Tour | Tuesday, April 11
Depart at 8:15 a.m. | Return Around 3 p.m. | Garden Ticket: $20/person | Lunch Cost: Your Own Meal

Seniors, let's enjoy the beauty of God's creation together during a trip to Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground, Ga. Note: Gibbs Gardens has discontinued its tram service around the property, but the Valley Gardens (lower area) provide a fully accessible, level walk. After the tour, we'll stop for lunch before coming back to Second-Ponce. Sign up at www.spdl.org/rsvp.

Travel While You Can | Special Travel Presentation | Wednesday, April 12

Nancy Motes, owner of the Travel While You Can agency and overseas travel specialist, will make a special presentation about individual and group travel opportunities. If you’re interested in taking a trip, but aren’t sure where to start, join Nancy for this informative session!

Heart and Sole Adult Fitness Class | Saturday, April 15
10:30 a.m. | Community Wellness Center | Cost: Free 

This event is a wonderful opportunity to have fun as a community while caring for our physical and spiritual health. Heart & Sole is limited to 20 participants and all fitness and skill levels are welcome. RSVP by Friday, April 14.

Kids' Club FriYAY | Friday, April 21
5:30-9:30 p.m. | Ages 0-5th Grade | $15/child

GHES Spring Fest | Saturday, April 22
11 a.m.-2 p.m. | Garden Hills Elementary School

Garden Hills Elementary School needs 10 volunteers to hang out, staff games and pass out prizes at their upcoming Spring Fest. Kids' Club Family Camp-Out | Friday, May 5-Sunday, May 7
Stone Mountain Park | Cost: TBA

Kids’ Club families, camp out with us! We’ll have a water-front campsite for tents only with electrical hookup, water and fire pit, and nearby restrooms & showers. Meals will be sign-up and/or potluck style, and we’ll spend Saturday enjoying Stone Mountain attractions. Sign up by April 15.

Take “stock” in our annual trip to Touching Miami with Love! July 8-15, 2022, Second-Ponce is once again sending a mission team to work with the Touching Miami with Love (TML) after-school program in Miami, Florida. Our team needs the support of their church family, and there are ways you can serve alongside them before and during their trip. When you covenant to help "prep, pay or pray," you make an investment in the lives of the children at Touching Miami with Love as well as in the hearts of our trip team and in the future of God's Kingdom on earth.

Passport Camp for Youth | June 19-24
Converse University, Spartanburg, SC | $450 until May 3

PASSPORT is a creative discipleship and mission action camp that allows students to have a varied camp experience, explore their passions, and grow in their faith journey. Along with small group Bible studies led by our amazing PASSPORT summer teams, your students will experience afternoon activities that engage their faith and give them the opportunity to deepen their faith and serve others through local mission engagement. Your students will be assigned to a “house” that will travel together through each day’s programming, including afternoons spent off-campus in service to the communities around our host campuses, creative discipleship experiences, and worship leadership opportunities. Sign up by Wednesday, May 3. Passportkids Camp | July 16-19
Rock Eagle 4-H Center, Eatonton, GA | Completed 3rd-6th Grade | $375

PASSPORTkids is a 4-day, 3-night children’s camp filled with fun faith-building programming and hands-on missions education. Here, your students will discover God’s love and practice being followers of Jesus through an active schedule of Bible studies, developmentally appropriate programming rooted in Scripture, hands-on missions, recreation and worship in an intimate, low-pressure experience aimed at equipping children for a lifetime of faith.
